Village festivals in the Pays de Gex in 2026: the calendar of must-sees
10 May 2026
The Pays de Gex is known for its landscapes, its proximity to Geneva and its cheese. It’s less known for the density of its local festivals — and that’s a shame, because they tell a story about the territory you won’t find in guidebooks or on platforms. Here’s our 2026 calendar, with confirmed dates at the time of writing and the recurring events to plan around.
Why come to the local festivals of the Pays de Gex
Three reasons. First, these are free or very low-cost events, bringing all generations together regardless of budget. Second, locals actually go: these aren’t tourist re-enactments, they’re moments of real community life that travellers are warmly welcome to share. Third, each festival has its own anchor: agricultural, medieval, religious, cultural, pyrotechnic — and tells a different story of the same territory.
For the travellers who stay with us a few days, planning the trip around a local festival is often what they remember when they head home.
The 497th Fête de l’Oiseau in Gex — 2026 edition
This is the major spring event. The Fête de l’Oiseau de Gex is one of the oldest popular traditions in the Ain. Its first edition dates back to 1288 (yes, the 13th century): the brotherhood of the Knights of the Bird used to organise a papegay shoot — a wooden bird mounted on top of a pole. The most accurate shooter was crowned “King of the Bird” for the year.
The tradition has carried on, modernised but recognisable. In 2026, the 497th edition is scheduled — exact dates to be confirmed on oiseaugex.com, with these highlights:
- King’s and Queen’s shoots at the firing range, designating the year’s royalty.
- Medieval and floral parade through the town centre, departing from avenue de Perdtemps around 3 pm on Sunday.
- Torchlight retreat and fireworks in the evening.
- Brotherhood fair on the Perdtemps esplanade, free entry, throughout the weekend.
- 2026 Queen Election Ball with live orchestra, daytime children’s activities and creative workshops.
The atmosphere is family-friendly, the medieval costumes are well crafted, and the fair is worth the detour for its crafts and food. The town centre of Gex is pedestrianised during the parades; come early and park on the peripheral car parks (Perdtemps, Champ-de-Foire).

Tôt ou T’Arts — 25th edition, 26 April to 20 September 2026
This is the street arts festival of the Pays de Gex, run by the Centre Socioculturel Les Libellules for 25 years. The strength of Tôt ou T’Arts: it’s completely free, spread across the territory and consistently well programmed.
The 2026 edition offers 15 shows, 10 French and international companies, on 17 dates across 13 partner municipalities: Gex, Léaz, Cessy, Crozet, Ferney-Voltaire, Mijoux, Lélex, Chézery-Forens, Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Versonnex, Sauverny, Segny, Ornex.
On the programme: circus arts, street theatre, music, puppetry, cabaret. No booking, free entry. Perfect for a spontaneous evening with family or friends.

Fête à Voltaire — Ferney-Voltaire, Saturday 27 June 2026
In Ferney-Voltaire, the town pays tribute every year to its illustrious 18th-century resident. The Fête à Voltaire blends street performances, costumed processions, music and professional theatre companies in the setting of the château and the village. A more intimate event than the Fête de l’Oiseau, but worth the trip — especially if you enjoy outdoor theatre.
The 2026 edition is confirmed for Saturday 27 June (ferney-voltaire.fr).
Music Day — everywhere, Sunday 21 June 2026
As across France, Music Day takes over every municipality in the Pays de Gex on 21 June, which falls on a Sunday in 2026 (some municipalities anticipate on Saturday 20). In Saint-Genis-Pouilly, two simultaneous stages are traditionally set up with an inter-generational programme. In Ferney-Voltaire, several spots in the town centre host local bands. In Gex, on place Gambetta and place du Marché. In Divonne-les-Bains, the spa park becomes an open stage.
No booking, free, easy-going atmosphere. Programmes published by each town hall in early June.
14 July balls — fireworks and parades
The French national day is celebrated in most municipalities of the Pays de Gex with the same ritual: torchlight retreat on the evening of the 13th, military parade and speeches on the morning of the 14th, firefighters’ ball or popular ball in the evening, fireworks around 10–10:30 pm.
A few recurring rendezvous:
- Gex: fireworks fired from the Vertes Campagnes park, ball on the market square.
- Sergy: firefighters’ ball, traditional dinner at a friendly price.
- Divonne-les-Bains: fireworks fired over the lake, particularly spectacular.
- Ferney-Voltaire: fireworks from the château park, ball in the town centre.
- Saint-Genis-Pouilly: fireworks and popular ball, programme announced in June.

Festival des Quartiers d’été — Saint-Genis-Pouilly, July–August
In Saint-Genis-Pouilly, the Quartiers d’été festival runs throughout the school holidays with open-air shows, cinema under the stars, creative workshops, sports and musical activities staged in different neighbourhoods. Itinerant format, free, family-oriented.
Annual programme published by the town in late June: saint-genis-pouilly.fr.
Summer patron-saint festivals — Grilly, Sergy, Cessy, Échenevex
The smaller villages of the Pays de Gex keep alive their patron-saint festivals in summer, run by local festivities committees. Depending on the village, you’ll find:
- car-boot sales and craft markets,
- village dinners (cured meats, raclette, sauerkraut depending on the season),
- children’s games, sports demonstrations,
- evening ball, sometimes fireworks.
The 2026 dates are not all published at the time of writing. For the villages we work in directly (Grilly, Échenevex, Cessy), we’ll let you know on arrival if a festival falls during your stay. Otherwise the official calendar is maintained by the Pays de Gex Tourist Office: paysdegex-montsjura.com.
Practical tips for a successful village festival
Arrival. Most festivals are held in town centres and involve street closures. Allow 15 to 30 minutes’ margin and use the peripheral car parks.
Food and drink. Festivals have their own bars and food stalls serving local fare at accessible prices. No need to book a restaurant for the evening, except for high-profile events such as the Fête de l’Oiseau.
With children. Festivals in the Pays de Gex are family-friendly. Parades and fireworks are pram-accessible. Balls start to shift in style after 10 pm; it’s easy to leave before then.
Weather. The Pays de Gex can be cooler than expected, especially during evening events at altitude (Mijoux, Lélex). A fleece in your bag is a good idea even in July.
Accommodation. Fête de l’Oiseau weekends and the national day are peak demand windows. Book your stay several weeks ahead if you want to be in the heart of the action.
